In 2022, Schnucks Markets deployed Workday Compensation to extend its Workday estate and centralize pay administration under the Compensation Management category. The Workday Compensation implementation was scoped to support HR and payroll teams for a 14,500 employee grocery operator with operations across 112 stores and corporate functions.
The deployment configured typical Compensation Management capabilities including structured compensation plans, configurable pay components and salary bands, merit and variable pay cycles, budgeting and approval workflows, and role based security for authorized compensation actions. Workday Compensation was set up to align compensation events with performance and talent data, and to automate approval routing and audit trails for pay changes and exceptions.
Workday Compensation was implemented to leverage unified employee data from the companys existing Workday Human Capital Management deployment in mid 2019, enabling single source compensation calculations and simplified payroll handoffs. The solution supported operational coverage across recruiting, onboarding, store management, and payroll processing, allowing pay setups to be applied quickly during high volume hiring bursts and weekly payroll cycles.
Governance was organized through HR and compensation ownership models that enabled rapid process changes, testing and rollouts, consistent with Schnucks need to adapt processes quickly. Workday Compensation contributed to operational outcomes already documented in the organization, including accelerated onboarding during pandemic hiring surges and improved teammate engagement and retention through streamlined pay and talent workflows.
