Block (ex Square, Inc) Legacy Block Afterpay Payment Processing ERP Financial Management n/a 2017 2017
In 2017 Smith & Caughey implemented Block Afterpay on their website, integrating a buy now pay later option into the retailer's online checkout. This deployment placed Block Afterpay within the Payment Processing category to serve e-commerce payments and consumer checkout financing for the Smith & Caughey storefront. The implementation centered on embedding the Block Afterpay checkout widget and payment authorization flows into the website checkout, enabling staged consumer payment authorizations and merchant order capture. Configuration work included payment routing from the storefront to the Block Afterpay service, management of authorizations and settlements, and setup of merchant account parameters with Block. Operational coverage was focused on the online channel, specifically the website checkout and the retailer's finance and e-commerce operations. Integrations included front-end checkout instrumentation and back-office settlement and reconciliation workflows with the retailer's order management and finance teams, without naming or altering other internal systems. Governance changes emphasized new payment handling and reconciliation processes for finance, updated checkout workflows for e-commerce operations, and merchant-level settlement terms with Block. The Smith & Caughey deployment of Block Afterpay standardized a Payment Processing option on the website and aligned online checkout and finance procedures to support consumer financing through Block Afterpay.

Operational coverage extended across store operations including a floating department of six employees, a seasonal gift wrapping team of eighteen employees, S&C coaches senior sales assistants, and HR support for shop floor visibility and event staffing. Governance and process responsibilities were embedded into the system operation, with HR managing immigration applications, advising on employee relations best practices, acting as treasurer for an internal healthcare society, and participating on the health and safety committee.
