As Sonoco evaluated cloud alternatives they prioritized secure and flexible infrastructure capable of running Oracle and non Oracle workloads with required segregation and security controls, options for virtual machine or bare metal servers, Exadata Cloud Service for on demand scaling and reduced operational patching, and disaster recovery over low latency private connections, which supported a single pane of glass approach to troubleshooting the ecosystem. Following the on premises deployment Sonoco accelerated plans to migrate to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to gain speed and scalability while controlling costs. On OCI they reported a 17% performance improvement in applications after performance tuning, reduced operational tasks through managed Exadata services, and implemented cost control mechanisms to deploy resources only when needed. As of 2020 one third of Sonoco data center facilities had moved to cloud, and the roadmap calls for additional migrations plus rollout of new applications such as AP automation, OTM, OPM, and a cloud version of SOA in continued collaboration with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
