In 2020 Southbase Construction implemented the DroneDeploy Platform to support remote site management across its New Zealand construction projects. The Computer Vision deployment began in early 2020 to capture aerial imagery and 360° walkthroughs for project oversight while COVID access restrictions limited on-site presence.
Southbase configured the DroneDeploy Platform to generate orthomosaics, timed progress imagery, and 360 degree virtual walkthroughs that were linked to project records, enabling visual as-built documentation and issue identification. The implementation emphasized interoperability with building information models, integrating aerial imagery and 360° walkthroughs with BIM to spatially align site conditions with design models.
Operational scope covered site management and project delivery teams on active construction sites in New Zealand, shifting routine inspections and progress reporting into remote workflows. The deployment delivered stated outcomes including 89% remote workforce enablement and faster project completion timelines during the pandemic period.
Governance changes centered on standardized capture protocols and remote inspection workflows to ensure consistent image quality and traceable inspection records, supporting coordination between site teams and project managers. The program reduced on-site travel and rework by making visual evidence part of project governance, while maintaining construction oversight through the Computer Vision capabilities of the DroneDeploy Platform.
