Microsoft Legacy Microsoft Power BI Analytics and BI Analytics and BI n/a 2014 2018
In 2014 The Urban Institute implemented Microsoft Power BI as part of its Analytics and BI portfolio. The deployment was executed against a heterogeneous data platform that included Redgate, JIRA, ColdFusion, MySQL, Windows Server 2003 through 2016, Oracle Linux, MS SQL Server 2008/2008 R2/2012/2016 Enterprise Edition, SSRS, SSIS, VMware and AWS. Implementation work centered on enterprise reporting, data modeling and ETL consolidation, with Microsoft Power BI used for self-service visualization and dashboarding. The team developed OLAP cubes, facts and dimensions and used Multi Dimensional Expression MDX to access aggregated views, while SSIS and Talend Open Studio were implemented for ETL, transformations and package orchestration. SSRS reports with cascading parameters and chart types such as bar, pie, line and column were maintained alongside Power BI reports for cross-consumption of enterprise and ad hoc analyses. Integration points included linked servers for SQL, Oracle and MySQL databases, importing and exporting databases to Amazon RDS, and tight operational coupling with SQL Server utilities such as SQL Agent, SQL Alerts, SQL Jobs and SQL Mail for scheduled execution and monitoring. Database management practices applied Redgate SQL Data Compare for post-migration validation, DBCC maintenance commands for consistency checks, fail-over clustering on SQL Server 2012/2016 for availability, and SQL Server patching workflows in clustered environments. Governance and operational controls emphasized ETL design practices, parameterized SSIS packages using environment variables, logging of package events into SQL Server and proactive monitoring to avoid deadlock and blocking in high transactional environments. Project-level advisory included briefing senior management on data and database management issues, and the combined SSRS and Microsoft Power BI reporting capability produced user-friendly visualizations that had a major impact on business decision making.

DocuSign Legacy DocuSign eSignature Digital Signing Content Management n/a 2021 2021
In 2021, The Urban Institute deployed DocuSign eSignature as a Digital Signing solution on its public website to enable electronic execution of client facing agreements and data collection forms. The implementation emphasizes embedded signing flows on web pages, capture of executed documents as PDF, and retention of DocuSign audit trails to support signature verification and recordkeeping. DocuSign eSignature was configured to manage signature workflows, recipient routing, and authentication controls, and it is used to support research administration, contracting, and external engagement processes.
