In 2017, Ultimate Health implemented Optum RX as its core Pharmacy Management platform. The Optum RX deployment centralized pharmacy benefit administration for Ultimate Health, operating as a cloud oriented pharmacy benefit manager solution for a United States based, 50 employee insurer, and was provisioned to support both Medicare and commercial member populations.
Optum RX was configured to deliver standard Pharmacy Management capabilities including prescription claims adjudication, formulary management, prior authorization workflows, member billing and statement generation, and coordination with mail order and specialty pharmacy channels. The implementation emphasized workflow automation for claims processing and pharmacy reconciliation, and incorporated member cost lookup and customer service routing specific to pharmacy benefits.
Operational integrations include direct electronic connectivity to retail, mail order and specialty pharmacies so that members fill prescriptions without paying at point of sale when certain billing options are active. Optum RX issues monthly billing on behalf of Ultimate Health Plans for prescription charges while members continue to pay plan premiums to Ultimate Health. Beginning in 2025 the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan is available as a voluntary payment option, it works with members current Part D coverage and Optum RX will bill members monthly on behalf of Ultimate Health Plans instead of members paying pharmacies at the time of pickup, members are instructed to contact Optum Rx at 800-311-7517 to confirm drug costs before leaving the pharmacy.
Governance and member communications were adjusted to support voluntary enrollment in the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, with documentation clarifying that there is no cost to participate and that participation may help manage monthly cash flow but does not lower overall drug costs.
