In 2014, the United States Department of Labor implemented Microsoft Power BI to develop enterprise dashboards and standardize reporting across multiple teams. Microsoft Power BI was deployed as part of the department's Analytics and BI tooling to support reporting, ETL orchestration, and data visualization for program and administrative functions.
The implementation included installation, configuration and administration of Production and non-Production SQL Server environments and a business intelligence stack comprised of Reporting Services SSRS, Integration Services SSIS and Analysis Services SSAS. Teams configured data source connections and user access, designed and deployed SSIS packages to ETL data from multiple sources into SQL Server databases, and developed SSRS reports to a Report Server. The environment referenced Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 R2 and 2012, SharePoint 2007 and 2013, SharePoint Online and Power BI as core components.
Integrations explicitly included ODBC connections to AIX DB2 database servers to support ETL processes and tight SharePoint integration for site collections, workflows and tracking tools. Security and access were managed through Active Directory groups across SQL Server and Report Server, and operational monitoring used SolarWinds DbProtect and Splunk. Support and development were coordinated with multiple development teams and agency site owners to maintain reporting and ETL workflows.
Governance activities covered deploying change requests and implementing Service Desk tickets in production and non production environments, managing user access and security, and creating custom SharePoint workflows to automate business processes. The team developed and maintained SharePoint lists and dashboards to monitor projects resources and services enterprise wide, formalizing process controls around BI content and access.
Operational outcomes included the creation of Power BI dashboards and ongoing performance and security monitoring of SQL Server databases, alongside continuous application support and customer service for BI and reporting operations. Microsoft Power BI served as the central Analytics and BI application supporting reporting, ETL and visualization across the department.
