The system orchestrates trading and operational decisions based on a balance between predicted consumption schedules, own generation and existing contracts, and it consumes forecast and contract information as runtime inputs. Integrations center on plant generation and generation availability inputs, consumption forecasting feeds and contract data to enable automated scheduling and trading workflows. Operational coverage was company wide across UPM Kymmene paper manufacturing, with the Manufacturing Execution System impacting energy operations, production scheduling and procurement workflows. Governance was adjusted to centralize energy scheduling and to create formal decision workflows for trading and contract execution within the energy operations function. Outcomes reported from the ABB Ability Manufacturing Operations Management deployment include extensive reporting and considerable improvements in energy efficiency, availability and predictability of energy supply and demand. The solution enabled trading based on the balance of predicted consumption schedules, own generation and existing contracts, creating significant savings.
