In 2017 Vedanta Aluminium and Power began its SAP S/4 HANA ERP Financial implementation, initiating a reimplementation to replace SAP ERP ECC 6.0 and to establish an enterprise platform across aluminium and power operations. The program targeted an Intelligent Enterprise architecture to unify finance, procurement and manufacturing processes and to deliver real time analytics and mobile enabled dashboards for executive decision making.
The deployment was executed as a greenfield S/4 HANA rollout complemented by master data governance and industry specific components, including MDG, LAM, GRC, FCC and WCM. The solution architecture integrated SAP S/4 HANA core with SAP MII for shop floor data and maintenance notification, SAP Ariba for supplier onboarding and source to pay, SAP Cloud Integration Gateway and SAP Process Orchestration for end to end connectivity, and SAP Lumira for operational and management dashboards.
Functional scope included finance and controlling modules FI and CO, sales and distribution SD, plant maintenance PM, production planning PP, materials management MM, quality management QM, cost of production and profitability via FCC, and supplier lifecycle and contract capabilities in SAP Ariba with sourcing, commerce automation, catalog, contract and supplier performance modules. The rollout also delivered Fiori user experiences for mobile approvals, automated month end financial close workflows, pot wise production confirmations through MII, and catalogue based procurement to reduce manual PR to PO activity.
Project governance was led by PwC which implemented SAP S/4 HANA and provided project and value governance, while SAP Ariba Consulting implemented the Ariba modules and worked collaboratively on end to end processes. The program included a comprehensive business process redesign and change management effort to harmonize master data across aluminium and power sectors, standardize templates and approvals, and move supplier interactions onto a digital collaboration platform.
Explicit outcomes recorded after go live include integrated shop floor costing with automated daily cost of production and accurate product costing, real time enterprise reporting across production, sales and power, improved supplier experience through digital collaboration, approximately 10 percent savings from auction and catalogue capabilities, roughly 1.5 million dollars saved from removal of duplicate master data, a reduction of 25 days from purchase requisition to purchase order through digitized source to contract, and a 60 percent reduction in commercial team catalogue workload. SAP S/4 HANA went live for core processes on 01.11.2018, SAP Ariba went live on 02.05.2020, and SAP MII went live on 01.10.2020, supporting the stated ERP Financial and operational objectives.

In 2017, Vedanta Aluminium implemented SAP Enterprise Asset Management to centralize asset records and coordinate maintenance planning for factory maintenance operations in India. The deployment concentrated on mapping, recording and auditing physical asset information and on scheduling all maintenance jobs in the SAP factory calendar for the operations and maintenance department.
Configuration emphasized an enterprise asset register, scheduled maintenance and work order management, spare parts and spare management workflows, plus audit and compliance capabilities consistent with Enterprise Asset Management. The program produced MIS and documentation workflows and structured analysis outputs, notably FMEA, RCA and breakdown analysis reports, to support equipment life tracking and performance monitoring.
Operational practices linked asset management processes with procurement and budgeting workflows, with the asset management executive working directly with procurement to specify spares, assist budget forecasting and enforce technical specifications prior to purchase. Governance centered on periodic internal and external asset optimization audits, audit trails and a maintenance scheduling regime in SAP, while the team engaged in quality circle improvement projects and escalated departmental requirements to management.

| SAP | Legacy | SAP Ariba Contracts | Contract Lifecycle Management | Content Management | n/a | 2019 | 2020 |
In 2019 Vedanta Aluminium implemented SAP Ariba Contracts as part of a broader Contract Lifecycle Management initiative to digitize procurement and supplier collaboration across its aluminium and power operations. The SAP Ariba Contracts deployment was positioned within the company’s intelligent enterprise roadmap alongside an SAP S/4HANA re‑implementation, targeting standardized procurement processes, supplier onboarding, and real time visibility for commercial and finance leadership.
The implementation included the SAP Ariba modules for Sourcing, Commerce Automation, Contract, Catalog, and Supplier Lifecycle and Performance Management, with configuration of contract templates, auction-enabled sourcing, catalogue based procurement, and automated contract approval workflows. SAP Ariba Contracts served as the central contract repository and CLM engine to enforce standardized templates and supplier performance rules, while enabling digital negotiation and template driven sourcing flows.
SAP Ariba Contracts was integrated with SAP S/4HANA using SAP Cloud Integration Gateway to support a cohesive source to pay process, supplier self registration, catalogue synchronization, and automated creation of purchase orders. Operational coverage focused on procurement and commercial functions, with downstream impacts on finance and operations for cost of production analytics, and supplier collaboration spanning domestic and global suppliers.
Project governance combined internal value and change programs with implementation support from PwC and SAP Ariba Consulting, and master data governance was enforced through SAP MDG to harmonize supplier and material master records. Explicit outcomes reported include reduced purchase requisition to purchase order lead time by 25 days, increased spend under management with catalogue and auction capabilities delivering approximately 10 percent savings, about $1.5 million savings from reduced master data duplicates, reduced invoice related issues by 90 percent through automation, and a 60 percent reduction in commercial team catalogue workload, while enabling retirement of multiple stand alone systems to simplify the IT landscape.
