| SAP | SAP HCM (HR) | SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central | Core HR | HCM | n/a | 2020 | 2020 |
In 2020, Volvo Car implemented SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central as its Core HR platform, replacing SAP HCM to establish a cloud-first employee master data backbone. The deployment positioned SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central as the authoritative source for global personnel records and organizational structures, and it was associated explicitly with Volvo Car's Core HR business function.
The implementation focused on standard Core HR capabilities typical of the category, including a unified employee data model, organizational management and position management, and configurable business rules to automate hire, transfer and termination workflows. Configuration work aligned Employee Central data constructs with existing recruitment and onboarding processes, reflecting prior and continuing responsibility for SuccessFactors Recruitment and Onboarding within Volvo Car.
Architecturally the program created a co-existence model between the new cloud-based SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central and the on-premise SAP HCM environment, preserving historical HR data while establishing Employee Central as the primary operational system. Operational coverage was global, governed through a centralized product ownership model based in Gothenburg, Sweden, with explicit global responsibility for both Employee Central and SAP HCM.
Governance was formalized through a Global Product Owner for Core HR role beginning December 2020, which centralized decision making for Core HR configuration, release prioritization and alignment with HR operations and recruitment functions. The governance structure emphasized standardization of HR master data and end-to-end process orchestration across recruiting, onboarding and ongoing HR operations without reference to external implementation partners.

| IBM | Legacy | IBM Maximo | Enterprise Asset Management | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2013 | 2013 |
In 2013 Volvo Car deployed IBM Maximo for Enterprise Asset Management to support maintenance operations in its Assembly Factory. The IBM Maximo deployment was positioned as the Enterprise Asset Management backbone for technicians tasked with ensuring technical reliability of highly automated production equipment across the Body, Painting and Assembly factory divisions. The implementation scope centered on the Assembly Factory where maintenance technicians perform remedial and preventive maintenance, investigation of technical disturbances, and rebuilding and improvement work in production equipment.
IBM Maximo was configured to manage core EAM functions including work order management, preventive maintenance scheduling, asset registry and hierarchy, spare parts and inventory visibility, inspection and failure reporting, and mobile technician tasking. Configurations emphasized event driven workflows and shift aware scheduling to support two shift and fixed night shift operations, with role based access for maintenance staff, production supervisors and engineering teams. The deployment of IBM Maximo also supported structured investigation assignments and remediation workstreams tied to continuous improvement activities in the plant.
The implementation linked IBM Maximo asset and work order records to the plant operational environment, aligning maintenance tasks with PLC controlled lines, robot systems, transport systems, tractors and product adapted mechanics, and coordinating with VCMS and external supplier networks for parts and rebuild activities. Architecturally the solution provided shop floor access via PC and mobile interfaces to enable technicians to capture failures, update work orders and execute preventive routines while remaining integrated with production schedules and supplier coordination.
Governance and process changes focused on closer collaboration between maintenance and production, formalized failure investigation and change control for rebuilding and improvement work, and training that combined electrical automation and PLC and robot programming knowledge with IBM Maximo user proficiency. The deployment directly supports the business functions of maintenance, production engineering and supply coordination, enabling technicians to carry out corrective, preventive and improvement maintenance in the Assembly Factory.
