NEC Corporation Professional Services 105276 $23.8B Japan Microsoft Microsoft Windows Operating System (OS) 2021 n/a In 2021, NEC Corporation began a major migration to Microsoft Windows across its employee desktop estate, leveraging Azure Virtual Desktop to enable a modern location independent workplace. NEC implemented Microsoft Windows under the Operating System (OS) category as the client OS for its cloud-hosted virtual desktop infrastructure in Japan. The implementation combined a Windows 11 migration with Azure Virtual Desktop session host provisioning, centralizing image management and standardizing desktop images to accelerate provisioning and simplify OS lifecycle management. NEC moved users from Windows 10 to Microsoft Windows 11 as part of the project, updating OS images and desktop configuration to align with cloud VDI operational patterns. Configuration efforts emphasized scalable session host pools and automated provisioning workflows consistent with large VDI estates. The Azure Virtual Desktop deployment began in 2021 for employee desktop VDI workloads in Japan and scaled to approximately 90,000 AVD instances by mid 2024, supporting broad operational coverage across NEC Corporation’s workforce in Japan. This architecture placed Microsoft Windows client instances on Azure Virtual Desktop session hosts, centralizing desktop delivery in the cloud. The deployment delivered improved desktop performance, more efficient bandwidth utilization, and faster provisioning times as reported by NEC. Operational governance emphasized centralized image and provisioning control within NEC’s IT organization, aligning desktop image updates and access policies with cloud provisioning cycles. The rollout prioritized cloud native VDI operations and OS standardization, with Microsoft Windows serving as the platform for employee desktops delivered via Azure Virtual Desktop.
