Seattle Goodwill | Non Profit | 1500 | $122M | United States | Microsoft | Microsoft Dynamics 365 Retail POS | Point Of Sale | 2020 | Avanade | In 2020, Seattle Goodwill implemented Microsoft Dynamics 365 Retail POS to modernize its store operations and establish a unified Point Of Sale platform across its retail thrift business, engaging Avanade through the Technology for Social Good program. The deployment was positioned as part of a broader Microsoft Dynamics 365 platform rather than an isolated checkout upgrade, and the implementation timeline began with joint workshops and store visits to align retail operations and back office requirements. The solution architecture included four core elements spanning the back office, stores and warehouses, with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Retail POS serving as the front-line Point Of Sale application. Finance and operations functionality was configured for the accounting team to automate purchasing and other manual processes, while a bespoke Production Suite application was built using Microsoft Power Apps to manage the inventory intake and tagging workflow for donated items. A supply chain management capability was instrumented to provide near real-time visibility into goods movement from warehouses to stores. Integrations were realized within the Microsoft Dynamics 365 environment, linking the Retail POS, finance and operations modules and the Power Apps based Production Suite to create an end-to-end flow from donation intake through store sale. Operational coverage explicitly included Seattle Goodwill’s 24 stores, warehouse locations and the accounting team, with the system supporting retail floor staff, inventory intake clerks and supply chain coordinators. Governance and rollout used phased store rollouts over several months, backed by joint Avanade and Seattle Goodwill workshops to drive adoption and process standardization, and the team adapted to COVID-19 by shifting from largely in-person resources to a smaller virtual project team to keep the deployment on track. Early outcomes reported by the organization include faster turnaround from donation to sale, reduced transaction time to two or three minutes from as much as ten minutes previously, and improved supply chain visibility to support operational decision making. | |
