In 2017, Tronrud Engineering implemented Microsoft Dynamics AX as an ERP Financial system to centralize project-driven operations and improve handover between engineering and manufacturing. Tronrud Engineering is a make-to-order manufacturer headquartered in Hønefoss, Norway, with approximately 200 employees, producing long-cycle prototype equipment for oil and gas, photovoltaic, and food processing customers, and the Microsoft Dynamics AX deployment was positioned to support those complex project workflows.
The deployment extended Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 with To-Increase Advanced Discrete Manufacturing modules including Advanced Project Management, Product Engineering, and Visual Project Planning, and used To-Increase Connectivity Studio functionality to enable the Teamcenter PLM integration. The implementation configured automated BOM handling, automatic population of item IDs and project structures, and an engineer-driven publish action that moves design data from Siemens Teamcenter into Microsoft Dynamics AX, with ERP confirmation of received and processed data.
Integrations included the To-Increase Teamcenter PLM Integration and Siemens Teamcenter and NX for CAD and engineering data, delivered and managed by Columbus Global as the implementation partner. Operational coverage spans close to 50 Microsoft Dynamics AX users across production, procurement, and project management, and a design organization of about 15 engineers working in Teamcenter, aligning PLM-driven design workflows with ERP-driven materials planning and manufacturing execution.
The program introduced governance and process changes such as upfront data cleansing, single-entry item registration in Teamcenter, and standardized configuration to reduce administrative overhead for upgrades. Process restructuring removed a manual BOM review step, enabled BOM adjustments while production is underway, and shifted procurement earlier in the project lifecycle by providing earlier visibility to BOM requirements.
Explicit outcomes reported by the customer include time savings in the transition from design to production, cost savings from multiple process improvements, higher customer satisfaction, stronger competitive positioning in new markets, and being on track to meet a 2014 goal of 97 percent or better on-time customer delivery. Tronrud expects Microsoft Dynamics AX and the To-Increase PLM integration to support continued operational manageability and future enhancements.

Professional Services | 200 | $13M | Norway | Microsoft | Microsoft Dynamics AX PLM | Product Lifecycle Management | 2012 |
In 2012, Tronrud Engineering implemented Microsoft Dynamics AX PLM to establish Product Lifecycle Management controls across engineering and production. The deployment was completed in May 2013 and centralized CAD-to-ERP handover workflows in Norway.
The implementation integrated Microsoft Dynamics AX PLM with Siemens Teamcenter using a To-Increase integration delivered by Columbus Global, creating an automated connector that propagated CAD data into AX. Functional capability emphasized automated BOM and item creation in Microsoft Dynamics AX PLM and orchestration of handovers that directly fed MRP and materials planning processes.
Operational scope covered engineering and production teams in Norway, with governance adjusted to enforce controlled CAD-to-ERP handoffs and automated item master creation. The rollout eliminated much manual data entry, shortened transfer times from engineering to production, and improved MRP and materials planning accuracy.
