In 2009 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota implemented IBM z/OS, deploying the Operating System (OS) on IBM System z to consolidate core mainframe services and centralize DB2 production workloads. The implementation included deployment of IBM z/OS to host DB2 on z/OS as the primary transactional platform while also extending the System z portfolio to support Linux on System z workloads through an Enterprise Linux Server purchase.
BCBSM had been running application servers in a Microsoft Windows environment on Intel hardware prior to the initiative, and the project configured virtualization and server provisioning capabilities on the System z platform to support consolidation and faster provisioning. The program used the ELS System z server for proofs-of-concept, staging, and load-testing, and targeted Oracle and SAP ERP consolidation scenarios alongside DB2 on z/OS to reduce server footprint and simplify infrastructure management.
The implementation integrated IBM XIV Storage System technology alongside System z to optimize storage efficiency and reduce cooling and power requirements, with documentation citing XIV deployments delivering significant TCO reductions versus conventional storage. Disaster recovery and availability were explicitly addressed, with a full disaster recovery capability to a secondary data center demonstrated within 90 minutes, an improvement noted against prior recovery windows and described as an availability enhancement for business continuity.
Computacenter US served as the systems integrator, using the Hatfield Solution Centre as the staging location for the ELS server and client proofs-of-concept, and the rollout covered headquarters in Eagan and branch operations including Arrowhead and Rochester. Operational governance consolidated platform management, reducing operational complexity and enabling a smaller dedicated support team, with BCBSM reporting improved availability and reduced business complaints following the IBM z/OS and System z deployments.
