In partnership with ITpoint Systems, fenaco consolidated six separate Power servers at its Winterthur and Sursee sites into newly implemented IBM Power S824 servers running POWER8 and the IBM i operating environment; the Sursee system was designated as the disaster-recovery target. The project prioritized uninterrupted, 24/7 ERP and core-application availability for business divisions such as Ernst Sutter AG and RAMSEIER Suisse AG and was planned around the organization’s limited annual maintenance windows. The implementation integrated existing SAP workloads and the IBM i portfolio, transferred reduced IBM i licenses to the new systems, and adapted the existing Vision iTera high-availability software to the consolidated topology. Storage was externalized to IBM V9000 arrays presented over a 16 Gb Fibre Channel SAN, and the environment was enhanced with Micro-Latency Flash modules featuring Real-Time Compression. Those storage changes compressed fenaco partitions by about 70% and allowed the removal of roughly 200 conventional disks in favor of approximately two dozen flash modules, improving rack-space, power, cooling and maintenance characteristics as identified during the planning phase.
