| Jenkins | Legacy | Jenkins | API Management | PaaS | n/a | 2018 | 2018 | In 2018, Altair Engineering implemented Jenkins to centralize continuous integration and deployment workflows. Jenkins was provisioned within the API Management category to provide build orchestration, pipeline automation, and developer-facing CI capabilities across software delivery pipelines. The Jenkins deployment was architected to operate on AWS infrastructure, leveraging EC2, VPC, Auto Scaling, Elastic Load Balancing, CloudFront, RDS, S3, Lambda, ECS and EKS for compute and container orchestration, with CloudWatch and the ELK stack used for telemetry and log aggregation. Infrastructure-as-code was applied through Terraform modules that provisioned highly available EC2 instances and EKS clusters, and Jenkins pipelines invoked Terraform to automate environment provisioning and tear down. Functional capabilities implemented in Jenkins included plugin management and updates to sustain CI pipeline features, pipeline definitions to build Maven projects, credentialed user and group controls for build permissions, and integration points that executed Ansible playbooks for configuration management. Ansible roles and playbooks were used to automate environment configuration changes, to scale container tasks, and to manage host-level files and services, while custom Terraform plugins extended provisioning functionality. Integrations were explicitly wired into GitHub for source control, Jenkins for pipeline orchestration, Terraform for infrastructure provisioning, Ansible for configuration and deployment, and monitoring systems including ELK, Nagios and Zenoss via API-driven playbooks. Data movement and analytics workflows used AWS Database Migration Service to populate RDS and S3, and AWS Lambda functions were invoked to analyze S3 objects with results surfaced through CloudWatch. Governance and operational process changes centered on constrained permissioning and account configuration for Continuous Integration, use of IAM to control access to AWS resources, and formalized participation of the development team in release cycles across Development, QA, UAT and Production. Plugin lifecycle management, scripted automation for scaling and environment provisioning, and the embedding of Jenkins pipelines into release orchestration defined the ongoing operational model. | |
