In 2016 Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children implemented Microsoft Power BI to provide actionable information to business units and to establish a central Analytics and BI capability. The deployment placed Microsoft Power BI at the visualization and consumption layer of an enterprise Microsoft analytics stack, with an emphasis on operational dashboards and analytical reporting across the organization.
The implementation architecture combined Microsoft Power BI with SSRS, SQL, SSIS, R and other tools to create an end to end data pipeline. SSIS was used for scheduled extract transform and load processes into SQL data stores, SSRS remained in service for formatted operational and compliance reports, R was embedded for statistical modeling and advanced analytics, and Microsoft Power BI provided interactive semantic datasets and dashboarding.
Integrations were focused on publication and consumption workflows, with Microsoft Power BI connecting to curated SQL datasets and to SSRS outputs where pixel perfect reporting was required. Data model standardization and scheduled refresh processes were implemented to ensure dataset currency, and R scripts were integrated into transformation and analytic stages to surface derived metrics for business users.
Governance and operationalization were organized around a central BI team that managed model certification, dataset publishing, refresh schedules and access controls for business units. Training and documentation supported business user adoption of Microsoft Power BI, while SSRS and SQL based reports continued to support transactional and regulatory workflows within the Analytics and BI program.
