In 2018 Barclays Bank Ireland implemented SAP Concur Expense to centralize staff cash and corporate card expense processing. SAP Concur Expense is an Expense Management application deployed to support Financial Control and wider finance operations across Barclays Bank Ireland and its European branch network during the Brexit transition readiness program.
The deployment focused on core Expense Management capabilities such as expense capture and submission, corporate card reconciliation, policy enforcement, and automated approval workflows configured to align with monthly financial close cycles and consolidated reporting. Configuration work included mapping Concur expense types to the organization chart of accounts and posting rules required by the new SAP HANA accounting ledger.
SAP Concur Expense was integrated with the newly implemented accounts payable platform Coupa and with the SAP HANA general ledger, enabling electronic interfaces from expense capture through to payables and the consolidated ledger. Operational coverage included Financial Control, accounts payable, and regional financial controllers across European branches, and supported the monthly analytical review sessions used to validate consolidated financial statements for the Board of Directors.
Governance for the rollout was led by the Financial Control department with oversight from the Brexit transition steering group, and the project lead role managed configuration, stakeholder engagement, and user onboarding for staff expense and corporate card users. Process changes standardized approval workflows and reconciliations between corporate card feeds and Concur, and adjusted month-end procedures to ensure expense data fed the consolidated reporting timetable.
The SAP Concur Expense implementation was completed successfully and ran alongside parallel finance initiatives including the SAP HANA ledger implementation, the Asset Quality Review, and adoption of IFRS 9 and IFRS 16, aligning expense posting and budget controls with Barclays Group reporting requirements.
