Configuration emphasized supplier portal capabilities and invoice lifecycle orchestration to move manual invoice inquiries into system-driven notifications and workflow states.
Operational coverage centered on accounts payable and procurement functions, with suppliers given online access to track invoice status and payment schedules, which reduced help-desk call volumes. Many suppliers adopted early-payment offers to improve cash flow, a behavioral outcome highlighted by Hanif Dhrolia, E-Commerce Manager of Supply Chain Central Services, Operations and Enterprise Supply Chain at BC Hydro.
Governance and rollout were coordinated through centralized supply chain e-commerce management, focusing on supplier onboarding and the handoff between procurement and AP teams. In 2017, BC Hydro implemented Amazon EC2 as part of an Application Hosting and Computing Services deployment to accelerate utility computation for power generation output management. The engagement targeted a compute-first use case where model runs needed to execute roughly ten times per month, and previous approaches using existing laptops required 10 to 20 hours per run which was operationally impractical.
The implementation provisioned ephemeral EC2 compute capacity sized to 216 CPUs and automated lifecycle operations to support on-demand model execution. Configurations focused on rapid provisioning and teardown, the ability to deploy data and program code to the cloud in approximately five minutes, spinning up the compute environment in 10 to 15 minutes, executing the model in 10 to 12 minutes, and destroying the environment in five to 10 minutes.
Onica by Rackspace Technology provided systems integration and software engineering to plan and implement the AWS-based solution, defining necessary components and integration patterns with AWS platform services. The project emphasized automated deployment pipelines and secure handling of model input and output data, embedding operational controls to manage cost and data protection within the Amazon EC2 environment.
Operationally the Amazon EC2 implementation enabled BC Hydro to run short burst, high compute workloads on demand while controlling per-run cost, with a cited total cost per run of approximately $10. Governance and process changes included automated orchestration for provisioning and teardown, and tighter operational procedures for secure data deployment and retrieval, enabling the utility to adopt an on-demand compute model for power generation output management.
