| Microsoft | Legacy | Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central | ERP Financial | ERP | InteGen | 2019 | 2019 |
In 2019 ChristchurchNZ implemented Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central to establish a cloud-based ERP Financial platform that addressed disaster recovery and local support requirements following the 2011 earthquake. The project was delivered with implementation partner Intergen and positioned Business Central as the core finance system for the council agency that drives events, visitor attraction, business growth and investment for the city; ChristchurchNZ was the first organisation in New Zealand to implement Business Central.
The rollout was finance-led rather than technology-led, with Intergen working directly with end users to configure core financial management and project accounting capabilities typical of an ERP Financial solution. Deployment used Business Central’s wizard-like process, requiring minimal custom development, and Intergen implemented extensions layered on top of the stable core architecture, delivering some enhancements in two days. Data migration involved extracting data from the prior environment and loading it into Business Central, with validation of data quality reported as the primary implementation effort.
Operational coverage focused on finance and project-based activity, with the system supporting automated purchase order creation and authorisation workflows and plans to extend automation further. ChristchurchNZ is evaluating optical character recognition to accelerate invoice processing and is planning a future integration between Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Microsoft Dynamics CRM to align financial and customer engagement data on a common Microsoft platform. Intergen provided local support intended to improve uptime and assist the agency with financial analysis and accounting process improvements.
Governance changes emphasized finance ownership of requirements and end-user engagement during configuration, with Intergen providing ongoing strategic advice and support. The implementation leveraged Business Central’s upgrade model where the core remains stable and partner extensions are layered to remain unaffected by Microsoft’s automatic updates. ChristchurchNZ reported the system is more user-friendly, more reliable and more flexible, with the initial automation delivering increased transactional controls and further automation work scheduled.

In 2020, ChristchurchNZ deployed Microsoft Power BI to extend its Analytics and BI capabilities into its public web presence. The deployment centers on Microsoft Power BI embedded reporting and published dashboards surfaced directly on the ChristchurchNZ website to provide interactive visualizations alongside site content.
The implementation leverages core Microsoft Power BI functionality including report authoring, centralized datasets and data models, interactive dashboards, and scheduled data refreshes to keep published visuals current. Configuration work focused on creating reusable report templates and role based content publication workflows, aligning report objects with the organisation's content management processes.
Integration scope is explicitly web centric, with Microsoft Power BI content embedded in web pages to present analytics to external audiences and internal stakeholders through the same web channel. Operational coverage ties analytics authorship to the marketing and insights functions, with website delivery providing a single surface for both public facing and stakeholder reporting.
Governance was structured around content ownership, dataset stewardship and controlled publishing, establishing separation between report authors and viewers and defining approval steps for web publication. These controls support consistent reporting standards for ChristchurchNZ while keeping analytics management aligned with the organisation's existing web content lifecycle.
