| SAP | Legacy | SAP Apparel and Footwear (SAP AFS) | Retail Management | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2011 | 2012 |
In 2011 Columbia Sportswear implemented SAP Apparel and Footwear (SAP AFS) as its core Retail Management application to centralize order management, allocation rules and inventory optimization. The deployment targeted company allocation logic and order book performance, aligning system configuration with strategic objectives around inventory turn, margin management and on-time fulfillment.
SAP Apparel and Footwear (SAP AFS) was configured to support apparel and footwear-specific capabilities common to the Retail Management category, including order management and order book visibility, allocation engines and replenishment logic, size and color matrix inventory controls, and merchandising-oriented master data management. The implementation included reporting and scenario analysis capabilities to produce metrics on order fill rate, on-time delivery, order accuracy and shipping execution for use by commercial and operations teams.
Operational integration was centered on collaboration with Account Operations, Sales Management, Logistics, Distribution, Planning, Master Data and Manufacturing, reflecting the company requirement for cross-functional workflow orchestration. The system supported DC communication, inbound processing workflows and shipping coordination, enabling centralized allocation decisioning while surfacing order-level detail to distributed teams and regional planners.
Governance and process changes were formalized through a senior-level analyst role that managed corporate allocation rules, led cross-functional projects, and provided executive-level visibility into order book metrics. The implementation emphasized rule management, escalation paths to break allocation rules under constrained supply, and iterative improvements to Account Operations reporting and allocation processes to support Columbia Sportswear goals to increase inventory turn and margin.
