IFS Legacy IFS Document Management (DocMan) Document Management Content Management n/a 2020 2021 In 2020 Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense Company implemented IFS Document Management (DocMan) to centralize regulated product, engineering, and packaging documentation across its aerospace and defense operations. The deployment was part of a broader IFS footprint covering production planning and control, supply chain management, corporate performance management, engineering, project management, workforce management, quality management, and document management, aligning near-term configuration and project controls with long-term growth and regulatory needs. The IFS Document Management implementation focused on document control, revision management, and configuration management workflows to support complex engineer-to-order and make-to-order processes while enabling configure-to-order product lines. Document flows were configured to capture certified packaging requirements, trace initiation methods, and associate physical interfaces with as-built configuration data, allowing document records to feed planning and execution pools within IFS. The implementation also aligned document records to project accounting and cost capture to support an earned value management methodology in active development. Operational integration addressed connectivity and capture constraints across two primary manufacturing sites and between 30 and 40 purpose-built buildings with restricted wireless and power footprints. The architecture leveraged the open standards nature of the IFS platform to enable handheld data entry, bar coding capture, and digitized inspection equipment integration where feasible, and to interoperate with third-party systems for inspection, labeling, and field data collection. Document Management was configured to operate in a mixed connectivity environment, supporting offline capture workflows and later synchronization into central engineering and quality repositories. Governance and process changes formalized single-entry time and approval controls for labor and expense reporting, reducing redundant touch points in regulatory time reporting. The rollout followed a flexible step-by-step implementation approach, with IFS tools instrumented to support configuration management, project-level earned value tracking, and tighter control of certified packaging documentation. Reported outcomes included streamlined information flow, elimination of duplicate entry and errors, improved expense tracking, support for mixed-mode manufacturing and EVM practices, and expected direct and indirect savings as efficiencies mature.
