In 2007 Erzgebirge Hospital began deploying SAP IS-H Healthcare, a Healthcare ERP solution, initiating a feasibility and sizing program that moved into delivery and on site installation by PROFI Engineering Systems Germany in late 2008 and into productive operation in early 2009. The implementation centered on SAP IS-H Healthcare to manage complete hospital workflows, focusing on patient administration, clinical and administrative processing, and end to end hospital operations across cooperating clinics.
Configuration emphasized virtualization and consolidation within the SAP IS-H Healthcare landscape, reducing active server count from eight to three and housing up to 300 gigabytes of database data. The environment delivered response times under one second and was configured to support hospital operational workflows and named user profiles consistent with a Healthcare ERP deployment.
The technical architecture ran on IBM Power Systems with AIX 6.1 and a DB2 database, backed by a SAN based shared storage network and mirrored availability across two locations in separate fire sections. High availability was provided by an HACMP cluster enabling automatic failover between two IBM Power p570 systems, and an LTO4 tape library provided continuous backups. Virtualized SAP system instances and consolidated storage reinforced scalability and future capacity planning.
Operational governance was organized as a joint platform between Klinikum Chemnitz and Klinikum Mittleres Erzgebirge, with on site service and implementation by PROFI Engineering Systems Germany and IT service coordination via the regional IT subsidiary. The shared SAP operations platform supported approximately 1200 named users and 400 concurrent users at Klinikum Chemnitz, and approximately 400 named users and 120 concurrent users at Klinikum Mittleres Erzgebirge. Economic efficiency drove the rollout decision, with reported savings of over 20 percent from joint operation and an additional 10 percent in operations and maintenance, alongside lower energy consumption and improved hardware utilization.
