C&A Europe | Retail | 42000 | $10.0B | Germany | SAP | SAP S/4HANA Cloud | ERP Financial | 2022 |
In 2022, C&A Europe implemented SAP S/4HANA Cloud as an ERP Financial application to extend automated transport governance into its new SAP landscape. C&A Services, the retailer's central IT service provider, adapted transport automation for its three-tier ABAP landscapes and a hybrid topology that includes on-premises systems and SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud instances.
The implementation centered on SmartChange Transport Management as the core transport automation capability, delivered as an add-on component and optimized for operation under SAP S/4HANA. Configuration focused on audit-compliant documentation, syntax and consistency checks as per SAP guidelines, and retention of familiar monitoring and quality assurance functions within the SAP S/4HANA Cloud environment.
Integration work enabled central distribution and control of transport requests across on-premises targets and SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, preserving automated change and transport management workflows during hybrid operations. The solution supported hourly deployments and the ability to connect additional systems, with explicit plans to onboard further JAVA systems into the centralized transport process.
The project was executed with REALTECH providing SmartChange Transport Management and PROFI Engineering Systems Germany participating as an implementation partner. The pilot with C&A Services contributed to SmartChange S/4HANA certification and established governance patterns for centralized transport orchestration, monitoring, and audit trails across the landscape.
As stated by the customer, the outcome preserved preexisting automation benefits after the S/4HANA move, relieving SAP Basis teams, reducing overtakers and collisions, and ensuring complete, audit-proof traceability of all transport processes. C&A Services retained the ability to flexibly distribute transports to SAP HEC and on-premises targets and to connect new systems to the Transport Manager at any time.

Chemnitz Hospital | Healthcare | 300 | $32M | Germany | IBM | IBM Db2 | Database Management | 2007 |
In 2007, Chemnitz Hospital initiated a feasibility study and sizing analysis to consolidate SAP operations onto an IBM Power server platform and to standardize its Database Management layer using IBM Db2. The program moved from planning through a Europe wide tender, with implementation work carried out in 2008 and system delivery and installation completed at the end of 2008 by IBM Premier Partner PROFI Engineering Systems Germany, with SAP development and quality assurance running by mid December 2008 and productive operation beginning March 1, 2009.
The deployed architecture centers on IBM Power Systems, specifically dual IBM Power p570 servers, running AIX 6.1 with current patches and IBM Db2 as the database engine, integrated into a SAN based storage network and a fully virtualized SAP landscape. The technical stack includes virtualization to consolidate server counts from eight to three physical systems, an HACMP cluster for automated failover between Power p570 nodes, and an LTO4 tape library for automated backups, all supporting up to 300 GB of hospital data.
Functional coverage focused on SAP Healthcare operations, encompassing development, quality assurance, and productive SAP instances, plus integration with other hospital subsystems through adjusted interfaces. The shared platform supports full workflow across hospital operations, serving approximately 1200 named users with 400 concurrent users at Chemnitz and about 400 named users with 120 concurrent users at Mittleres Erzgebirge, reflecting joint operational scope across both hospital organizations.
Governance and rollout followed a cooperative operating model, with Mid German Health GmbH acting as IT service provider for Klinikum Chemnitz and implementation services delivered on site by PROFI Engineering Systems Germany. High availability and disaster resilience were addressed through mirrored storage across two locations in separate fire sections, cluster driven server failover, and a SAN design intended to scale with future requirements.
Reported outcomes stated economic efficiencies as the decisive factor, with savings of over 20 percent in investment costs through joint operation and consolidation and an additional estimated 10 percent savings in operation and maintenance, along with lower energy consumption and sub second response times that supported user acceptance. The deployment of IBM Db2 in this Database Management environment underpins the SAP landscape and was presented as a durable, scalable foundation for ongoing hospital IT operations.

Chemnitz Hospital | Healthcare | 300 | $32M | Germany | SAP | SAP ERP ECC 6.0 | ERP Financial | 2007 |
In 2007, Klinikum Chemnitz began implementation of SAP ERP ECC 6.0 for core financial and hospital operational processes, adopting the ERP Financial application to centralize transactional and workflow processing. The project was initiated with feasibility and sizing analyses in mid 2007 and progressed through hardware procurement and delivery in 2008, with development and quality assurance environments running at the partner site from December 2008 and productive operation commencing on March 1, 2009.
The SAP ERP ECC 6.0 deployment was provisioned on a shared IBM Power Systems platform that serves both Klinikum Chemnitz and Klinikum Mittleres Erzgebirge, using virtualization to consolidate server footprints. The production landscape runs AIX 6.1 with DB2 as the database, backed by a SAN for large shared storage, mirrored availability across two physical locations in separate fire sections, HACMP clustering for automatic failover between IBM Power p570 systems, and an automated backup strategy using an LTO4 tape library. The consolidated hardware estate reduced active servers from eight to three and the databases store up to 300 GB of data.
Functionally, SAP ERP ECC 6.0 supports the complete workflow of hospital operations for both partners and was integrated with other hospital subsystems after extensive interface adjustments. The joint platform supports approximately 1200 named users and 400 concurrent users at Klinikum Chemnitz, and about 400 named users and 120 concurrent users at Klinikum Mittleres Erzgebirge, covering administrative, financial, and clinical support functions in day to day operations.
Operational ownership and implementation were executed with on-site services from PROFI Engineering Systems Germany and IBM Premier Partner PROFI AG, with Mid German Health GmbH acting as the IT service provider for Klinikum Chemnitz. Economic efficiency and scalability were explicit decision drivers, with stated savings of over 20 percent through joint operation and consolidation and an additional 10 percent estimated savings in operation and maintenance, alongside observed reductions in energy consumption and sub second response times that supported user acceptance.
