In 2016, FirstCare Health Plans implemented Microsoft Power BI to expand its Analytics and BI capabilities. The implementation coordinated review and updates to the logic used in Health and Human Services Commission reporting, and provided guidance in the design of Member and Provider data marts to improve downstream reporting consistency.
Governance and delivery practices emphasized facilitated requirements meetings, iterative requirement gathering, QA of code produced by junior developers, mentoring and training, troubleshooting and performance optimization of existing code, and business user enablement for self serve reporting. The role functioned as a trusted advisor to business stakeholders and collaborated with other departments to introduce new data sources while participating in design, test and implementation activities.
Key results from the Microsoft Power BI initiative included developing stored procedures, tables and indexes to streamline provider reporting, creating a stored procedure to automate the quarterly Fee Schedule update, designing testing and deploying a self serve Fee Schedule report with business training, publishing a Provider dashboard in Power BI, and developing SSIS packages to integrate Fee Schedule data. The team coordinated regulatory reporting logic updates for HHSC, provided data mart design guidance, and received a citation award for exceptional contribution during HHSC audit preparation and state led meetings.
