In 2022, General Dynamics deployed ANSYS Discovery SpaceClaim for 3D Modeling to support Land Systems vehicle design, packaging, and systems architecture work at the Sterling Heights, MI site. The deployment targeted engineering teams responsible for space allocations, assembly packaging, and integration activities that feed manufacturing and vehicle build workflows.
ANSYS Discovery SpaceClaim was configured for direct geometry modeling, assembly modeling, interference and clearance analysis, and detailed drawing production. The environment was used to produce Control, Turret, Hull, General Assembly, Installation, and Division drawings, and to model cable guard and harness geometry, human factors studies, and kinematic motion scenarios.
The implementation was integrated with the CAD and PLM workflow, maintaining the CAD TeamCenter master model and operating alongside NX programs as part of the engineering toolchain. Desktop modeling clients were used to support vehicle builds and trail fits, with SpaceClaim artifacts captured in TeamCenter for configuration control.
Governance centered on disciplined review cadences, including weekly team meetings, engineering reviews, technical checkpoint reviews, and formal drawing approvals. Processes included coordinated task planning to meet department requirements, documentation of interference impacts, and recommended remediation steps for design conflicts.
ANSYS Discovery SpaceClaim supported interference and clearance checks across vehicle models and was explicitly used to document impacts and propose solutions during engineering reviews. The implementation tied 3D Modeling capabilities directly to systems engineering, human factors analysis, and manufacturing support functions within General Dynamics Land Systems.
