In 2015, George Mason University deployed MicroStrategy ONE Analytics as its enterprise Analytics and BI platform to meet growing needs to run cost effectively, increase student enrollment, monitor academic achievement, and support student success management. The selection followed a detailed RFP process and addressed the university’s need for a supported, strategic reporting environment as Oracle Discoverer was being sunset.
MicroStrategy ONE Analytics was configured to provide governed reporting, dashboarding, and ad hoc analysis across administrative domains. Implementation focused on the Business Intelligence Group delivering a semantic layer and report catalog to support student applications, registration, human resources, and finance, and on enabling self-service analytics and operational scorecards for operational and executive stakeholders.
The deployment was positioned inside administrative workflows for admissions, registrar, HR, and finance, using MicroStrategy reporting as the primary analytic surface for these business functions. The architecture emphasized a centralized BI layer that consolidated institutional reporting and reduced fragmented point reporting, enabling cross-functional data access for recruitment, enrollment monitoring, and financial planning.
Governance and rollout were driven by a Steering Committee for the Business Intelligence Group composed of senior executive management from units across the university, charged with setting BIG direction, guiding the migration project, and keeping project goals and targets aligned to changing budgetary constraints. In the short term George Mason University planned to transform recruitment processes while continuing to drive financial planning and student success using MicroStrategy ONE Analytics.
