In 2004 Honda Europe implemented SAP Vehicle Management System (VMS) as its Automotive ERP platform, executing a pan-European rollout focused on dealer order capture and sales portal functionality. The engagement was described as Honda's largest project at the time and concentrated on harmonizing dealer interactions across multiple European markets. The SAP Vehicle Management System (VMS) was positioned to centralize vehicle ordering and tracking workflows for the Dealer Network and corporate sales teams.
Configuration work emphasized a pan-European Sales Portal that enabled dealers to self-serve in placing and tracking their orders, together with detailed definition of SAP roles and authorisations under business control. Functional scope included order capture and dealer self-service workflows, role based access control, and portal-based tracking capabilities consistent with Automotive ERP operational patterns. Business analysts translated dealer and regional requirements into system configurations and authorization matrices.
The program engaged IBM and SAP consultants in development and delivery while Honda retained full business responsibility for defining SAP roles and authorisations. Integration focus in the project narrative centers on connecting the SAP Vehicle Management System with the Dealer Network channels for order submission and status updates, driven by requirements liaison with dealer and business stakeholders across Europe. The work established the portal as the primary interface between dealers and Honda Europe for order lifecycle management.
Governance was formalized through a Business Solution Governance group chaired by the project business analyst and composed of management heads across multiple business functions. The governance forum provided oversight to ensure integrity of the pan-European solution, align configuration decisions with business processes, and manage role and authorization policies. Responsibility for business sign off on roles and authorisations was retained by the Honda business group.
Operationally the project included an in‑house development of a Computer Based Training package for the Pan European Dealer Network, which resulted in significant savings and allowed the training budget to be met. The combination of the SAP Vehicle Management System (VMS), the dealer sales portal, and governance controls institutionalized dealer self-service order management within Honda Europe's Automotive ERP landscape.
