In 2019, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd implemented SAP S/4 HANA as an ERP Financial platform. The SAP S/4 HANA deployment was positioned to centralize finance and core ERP processes across Indian Oil while enabling customer onboarding workflows for the City Gas Distribution program.
The implementation architecture included a large scale SAP HANA database footprint, approximately 15TB, operated with multi target replication and HANA high availability and disaster recovery design. The technical stack used SuSe and HPE cluster architectures for NetWeaver and the database layer, with BASIS team ownership for upgrades, table partitioning, data archiving, delta merge operations and performance tuning to minimize business downtime.
Functional coverage extended across ERP, S4HANA CGD ERP, BW, Gateway, ESS and Process Orchestration middleware, with FIORI applications implemented for customer onboarding. The environment also incorporated OpenText VIM 7.6 for invoice and document processing, integrated with SAP S/4 HANA to support finance and procure to pay workflows.
Integration work included a major database migration effort from Oracle to HANA covering ERP, Gateway, ESS and PO systems, and RFC integrations with multiple external applications developed in Java, .NET and C++ as well as BizTalk, routed through SAP routers for production security. Architects also designed the ability to run production operations from the DR site with zero data loss, and implemented multitarget replication and DR drills to validate recovery objectives.
Operational governance was centralized under a senior BASIS technical architect serving as single point of contact for SAP implementations, who prepared action plans to minimize downtime and led successful DR exercises. Production security measures and operational runbooks were implemented for PRD, and business continuity procedures were validated through demonstrated DR drills and performance optimization activities.
