In 2012, KPN implemented Siemens Mendix to rebuild a Radio Access Network inventory and workflow application supporting 2G/3G/4G operations. The work was delivered as an Apps Development engagement focused on operational tooling for telecom network teams, with Siemens Mendix used as the model driven development platform to shorten delivery cycles and simplify application maintenance.
The implementation concentrated on inventory management and workflow orchestration capabilities, delivering a unified application for network element inventory, change request workflows, and release coordination. Development used visual modeling and rapid application development patterns typical of Apps Development platforms to enable frequent updates to business logic and user interfaces without large code rewrites.
The project was executed with systems integrator Tech Mahindra and targeted operational processes across KPNs Netherlands and Benelux operations, impacting field operations and network operations teams responsible for 2G, 3G, and 4G service rollouts. Deployment architecture emphasized a platform centric approach to expose inventory and workflow functions to operational users, reducing bespoke integration complexity within telecom operational processes.
Governance and rollout were organized around platform ownership and partner delivery, with Tech Mahindra supporting implementation and handover to KPN operational teams. Outcomes reported by the vendor included lowered release costs and accelerated update frequency, specifically a cited savings of $300,000 per application release and a reduction in update time to two months compared to prior six to eight month cycles, enabling faster service rollouts while reducing release overhead.
