In 2023, McKinsey & Company deployed Cohere Command R as part of a collaboration with Cohere to help clients adopt generative AI. McKinsey implemented Cohere Command R within a program focused on client-facing solution development, using the Generative AI Platforms capability set to support customer engagement, workflow automation, and internal knowledge-management exploration.
Cohere Command R was configured to provide instruction-tuned model inference, embeddings-based semantic search, and retrieval-augmented generation workflows, combined with prompt engineering and model customization typical of Generative AI Platforms. Implementation narratives describe use of the Cohere Command R application to assemble conversation agents, content generation pipelines, and automated workflow triggers that align with client business functions in sales, service, and operations.
Deployment used API-first model invocation and model hosting patterns to integrate generated outputs into client solution stacks, with projects spanning financial services, retail and other industry engagements. The engagement also included evaluations of Cohere Command R for McKinsey internal knowledge-management use, positioning the application to support consultative knowledge retrieval and advisor-facing summarization workflows.
Governance and rollout were organized as a collaborative client program with Cohere, focused on piloting and co-developing customized solutions and adoption support, rather than a packaged product rollout. The partnership is described as serving clients across financial services, retail and other regions, with McKinsey applying Cohere Command R to accelerate generative AI solution delivery and internal knowledge experimentation.
