In 2023 Rio Tinto deployed Maptek Vulcan for planning and design on the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea. The Maptek Vulcan implementation focused on advanced haul road design and complex 3D geometries, with an emphasis on meeting tight operational deadlines required by the project schedule.
The engagement used Maptek Vulcan in a 3D Modeling capacity to support surface modelling, haul road alignment and geometry design, volumetric calculations and engineering visualization for iterative design validation. Maptek Technical Services executed technical configuration and modelling workflows, adapting Maptek Vulcan capabilities for haul road alignment, sequencing and scenario comparison to address complex terrain and operational constraints.
Operational coverage centered on the Simandou project site in Guinea and involved Rio Tinto mine planning and engineering teams, with Maptek Technical Services working closely alongside Rio Tinto personnel during technical execution. The collaboration combined hands-on modeling delivery with knowledge transfer activities to embed the 3D Modeling workflows into Rio Tinto planning processes.
The engagement began in late 2023 and explicitly included structured training, upskilling and follow-up activities that continued into 2024 to transition model ownership to Rio Tinto teams. Knowledge transfer and training were used as governance mechanisms to sustain haul road design capability within Rio Tinto while supporting immediate operational delivery requirements.
