In 2020 Sanofi implemented SAP S/4 HANA as its core ERP platform to consolidate and optimize a global SAP estate while sustaining backoffice and industrial business processes during the COVID-19 vaccine response. The SAP S/4 HANA deployment targeted ERP Financial workflows and was executed with Accenture as the primary integrator, with KPMG and Infosys supporting role design and migration activities from the SAP ERP Central Component System.
Sanofi combined SAP S/4 HANA with SAP Access Control and a broad SAP Fiori rollout, which increased the number of roles and required a redesigned authorization model. The implementation leveraged SAP Access Control modules including access risk analysis, business role management, access request management, and emergency access management, and introduced electronic approvals, automated provisioning, periodic certifications, and managed temporary access to critical applications.
The project preserved native integration with Sanofi’s SAP landscape and rulesets while creating a global user access management system, and the team evaluated extending access controls to third party cloud solutions and SAP Cloud Identity Access Governance. Operational coverage spanned multinational backoffice and industrial functions, and the new design grouped technical authorizations into business roles that combined transactional elements with SAP Fiori user roles to simplify entitlement semantics.
Governance changes included an updated segregation of duties matrix aligned to SAP S/4 HANA and SAP Fiori behavior, streamlined business role management, and blueprint phase engagement with the SAP Center of Excellence. As stated by Sanofi, outcomes from the access management update included higher user satisfaction for SAP Fiori applications, a simplified business role catalog, reduced security incidents by 50 percent, and strengthened compliance with Sarbanes Oxley.

Workday Absence Management was configured within Workday's cloud Human Capital Management platform to provide centralized absence and leave workflows. Functional capabilities implemented included self-service time off requests and approvals, entitlement and accrual tracking, manager approval flows, and mobile access to absence records, leveraging Workday’s embedded analytics for operational visibility and planning.
The absence solution was integrated into the wider Workday environment alongside Human Capital Management, Compensation, Performance and Optimization, and Talent Management modules to enable cross-functional HR processes. Sanofi staged the rollouts with an initial deployment in North America, Germany, Switzerland and Austria covering about 28,000 employees, while performance and talent modules were deployed globally to accelerate manager and employee engagement.
Governance changes focused on centralizing HR data ownership, empowering managers with 24/7 access to people information, and placing data stewardship into the hands of employees and managers to reduce administrative burden. Explicit outcomes cited by Sanofi included a single database for HR data, improved analytics for decision-making, easier mobile access to information, and a lower total cost of ownership through a Software as a Service model.
