In 2019 Securian Financial initiated a multi phase, multi year global ERP cloud deployment of SAP S/4 HANA as its ERP Financial platform. The program was scoped to centralize enterprise financial management across the parent company and subsidiaries and establish a single source for core accounting and financial close processes.
The implementation deployed SAP S/4 HANA Cloud with typical ERP Financial capabilities including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed asset accounting, and financial close orchestration. SAP S/4 HANA was integrated with SAP Analytics Cloud for reporting and analytics, SAP Ariba for procurement and supplier management, and SAP Concur for travel and expense workflows, while infrastructure and cloud hosting leveraged AWS as part of the architecture.
Operational management was organized around a program team of over 150 associates spanning the parent company, subsidiary, and multiple strategic implementation partners. The rollout engaged finance, procurement, travel and expense operations, analytics and data teams, architecture, information security, strategic vendor management, and organizational change management to align technical configuration with business process ownership.
Governance and program controls were formalized through a program management plan and a charter that defined scope, goals, success criteria, and team responsibilities. Program leadership maintained direct engagement with program leaders and C suite to communicate risks, resolve blockers, and provide executive visibility while policies for program execution and accountability were designed and implemented to enforce consistent delivery.

Governance focused on regulatory compliance with IRS and DOL requirements, with Relius embedded in workflows for compliance testing, plan reporting, and timely Form 5500 filings. Accountability for work performed by Securian Retirement units was structured around centralized home office oversight and coordinated field office execution, ensuring plan operations aligned with plan documents and regulatory updates.
Operational rollout emphasized training and client education, with home office specialists and field teams instructed on Relius-driven processes and on how those processes impacted plan administration and client communications. FIS Relius is referenced as the primary system for Form 5500 preparation and compliance testing within Securian Financials pension and benefits administration environment.
