In 2018, Sun Life Malaysia deployed IBM BPM Standard for Business Process Management to centralize process orchestration for New Business and Underwriting across Life and Takaful product lines. The IBM BPM Standard implementation served as the core process engine and workflow layer to standardize end to end case progression, decision routing, and task management across underwriting and sales intake.
The implementation focused on category aligned capabilities common to Business Process Management, including process modeling and orchestration, automated workflow routing, human task lists, business rule execution, and SLA monitoring. Configuration work emphasized New Business intake flows and Underwriting case management, with forms and process variants to support Life and Takaful product specific underwriting rules and exception paths.
Integrations were aligned with existing insurance operational touchpoints, with documented interfaces to Life 400 and the Agency Management System, and linkage to Aetins payroll for HR and payroll touchpoints as part of operational handoffs. Operational coverage targeted underwriting, new business operations, agency operations, and IT support teams within Sun Life Malaysia, with the IBM BPM Standard platform providing the canonical workflow and audit trail for cross functional processes.
Governance and rollout were managed under a single lead project manager model, with responsibilities for client relationship, project planning and controls, project financials, change management, risk management, contract oversight, resource scheduling, project tracking, and quality assurance. Agile delivery was supported by a Scrum Master role that coached the development team on Scrum practices, facilitated backlog grooming with Product Owner and Business Analyst, removed impediments, and promoted transparency and team based problem solving during iterative releases.
