In 2021, Toho Bank implemented Apple Pay on its website. The deployment adds Apple Pay as a Payment Processing option within the bank's online channel, enabling browser-based Wallet interactions for cardholders in Japan. The scope is explicitly the web checkout flow rather than in-branch or terminal acceptance, aligning the implementation with the bank's digital channels.
Technical configuration follows the Apple Pay on the Web model, including merchant validation, the Apple Pay JS payment button, and server-side handling of tokenized payment credentials and authorization requests. Implementation work focused on integrating the Apple Pay payment sheet into the bank's web checkout, orchestrating JavaScript payment flows, and routing tokenized authorizations into the bank's existing card processing stack. The rollout affects digital payments, online banking checkout processes, card services, and payments operations teams, consolidating wallet-based browser payments via Apple Pay within the bank's Payment Processing architecture.

In 2017, Toho Bank implemented Ripple Blockchain as part of a 47-member Japanese bank consortium deployment on RC Cloud. The deployment used Ripple Blockchain, a Blockchain Platform, to enable real-time domestic and cross-border money transfers and to harmonize payment flows across participating institutions.
The implementation centered on a cloud-based RC Cloud payments platform powered by Ripple Blockchain, with configuration focused on payment rails for real-time settlement, transaction orchestration, and standardized message handling. Functional capabilities implemented included cross-border payment settlement, domestic real-time transfers, transaction visibility and reconciliation workflows, and provisions for interfaces to banking accounting systems as part of standardization work.
Architecture and integrations were cloud-first, operating through the RC Cloud environment, and the consortium evaluated potential interfaces to connect Ripple Blockchain with banks accounting systems and existing operational controls. Operational assessments explicitly covered operational risk management, regulatory considerations and standardization of transaction formats, and the consortium planned to extend network connectivity to banks outside Japan to broaden settlement corridors.
Governance and rollout were executed at consortium level, with participating banks coordinating evaluation of compliance, operational risk and interface standardization prior to commercial activation. The group confirmed a move into commercial phase, indicating a transition from pilot to production operation for Ripple Blockchain, and the implementation emphasized collective governance, standardized operational procedures and ongoing network expansion planning.
