U.S. Naval Research Laboratory implemented VMware Workspace ONE in 2019 to centralize endpoint and mobile device management under a Digital Workspace approach. VMware Workspace ONE is used to manage Windows 10 desktops, iOS devices, Intermec handheld scanners, rugged tablets and enterprise video phones, with approximately 275 mobile endpoints enrolled in Workspace One MDM.
Configuration and functional modules emphasize MDM enrollment, device provisioning, and workstation imaging with strict adherence to STIG security requirements. The implementation pairs Workspace One device management capabilities with SCCM and other Microsoft management products to support Windows 10 enterprise users, and it integrates with Active Directory for domain services and authentication while supporting remote VPN connectivity for remote users.
Operational coverage included Washington, DC support commands and formal audit cycles, using Workspace One to oversee daily and triennial device audits and to manage Intermec scanners and iOS devices for audited users. The environment also covered administration of multiple domain migrations and ongoing maintenance of mobile hardware applications spanning handheld scanners, video phones, tough tablets and iOS devices.
Governance and process changes were driven through a collaborative strategy with the Senior Admin group, including training programs that increased Tier 1 technician troubleshooting capability and centralized mobile endpoint administration. The program explicitly managed all mobile device endpoints through Workspace One MDM, addressed significant support challenges within time constraints, and delivered special project objectives across divisions.
