In 2014, University of Maryland Medical System implemented Epic Cosmos, adopting Epic Cosmos as a Data Warehouse to centralize clinical data and participate in Epic's multi-institutional data collaboration. The implementation positioned University of Maryland Medical System to consolidate patient-level clinical information for analytics, research, and quality measurement within the Epic Cosmos environment.
Epic Cosmos was configured to aggregate and normalize longitudinal clinical records and to enable cohort discovery, de-identified research datasets, and analytics-ready data models consistent with a Data Warehouse deployment. The configuration emphasized ETL and data model standardization, secure de-identification processes, and support for analytic workflows and population health reporting typical of Epic Cosmos implementations.
The Data Warehouse integrated with the health system’s Epic clinical instances to ingest longitudinal EHR data and support clinical analytics, quality measurement, and research use cases across clinical and operational settings. Governance centered on data sharing controls and participant-level access policies, with operational workflows to manage data requests and research cohort approvals within the Epic Cosmos governance framework.
