In 2021, Northumbria University implemented Oracle Cloud ERP as part of an Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications Suite deployment. The deployment included Oracle Cloud ERP and Oracle Cloud HCM to address finance, HR and post-award research services within the ERP Financial category, replacing SAP ERP ECC 6.0 and engaging Oracle Consulting Group for implementation support.
The implementation configured Oracle Fusion Cloud Enterprise Resource Planning modules alongside Oracle Fusion Cloud Human Capital Management and post-award research capabilities to standardise financial, research and workforce data on a single integrated cloud platform. Oracle Cloud ERP was provisioned to eliminate paper-based processes, streamline transaction workflows, and provide a common, intuitive user interface to accelerate adoption among approximately 3,376 staff.
Operational coverage extended across finance, human resources and research administration functions, with the platform positioned to improve remote accessibility for campus operations across Northumbria University in North East England. Data consolidation and process standardisation were central to the deployment, with migration activities targeted at moving transactional and workforce records from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 into the Oracle Fusion environment.
Governance and rollout were managed in partnership with Oracle Consulting Group, aligning process change with cloud release cadence and quarterly Oracle updates delivered every 90 days with no planned downtime. The program emphasized workflow digitisation and standard operating procedures to support ongoing continuous innovation, while explicitly aiming to improve user experience and organisation-wide efficiencies as stated by university leadership.

In 2019, Northumbria University implemented Oracle Cloud HCM Absence Management as part of an Absence and Leave Management initiative within a broader Oracle Fusion HCM programme. The Oracle Cloud HCM Absence Management deployment was executed alongside a multi-module HCM scope, explicitly covering Core HCM, Absence, Compensation, Time & Labor, Payroll, Performance, Goals, Talent, Career Development, Recruitment, Learn, HR Helpdesk and Intelligent Advisor modules.
The implementation emphasis was on integrated solution design and end-to-end hire to retire lifecycle coverage, with the HR/Payroll Functional Lead responsible for translating as-is process maps into detailed to-be business requirements across interdependent HCM functions. Functional configuration work included absence policy modelling, entitlement and accrual rules, absence transaction workflows, and alignment of Time & Labor inputs to absence processing, reflecting standard Absence and Leave Management capabilities within Oracle Cloud HCM Absence Management.
Integration and operational coverage focused on tight coupling between Absence and Core HCM, Time & Labor and Payroll to ensure data flow for pay, headcount and performance processes, and the programme team worked with the SI’s Functional Consultants to validate design options. Testing and quality gates comprised development of functional test scenarios, system acceptance testing across key processes, SME-focused user acceptance testing facilitation, defect triage, and system training for SME users prior to phased releases.
Governance and rollout were adjusted during delivery, moving from a planned big bang approach to a phased release of modules, with impact assessments performed to manage separation of go-live dates and to identify required process and functionality changes. The programme included re-planning activity, change control for functional areas, and structured support for UAT and cutover readiness coordinated by HR and payroll process leads.
