In 2015, Upsher-Smith Laboratories implemented SAP ERP ECC 6.0 as its ERP Financial platform for core finance and integrated business processes in its life sciences environment. SAP ERP ECC 6.0 served as the central transactional system across finance and adjacent functions, with ongoing development and operational support documented through internal ABAP engineering roles.
The implementation included configuration and custom development across FI, SCM, MM, SD, PP, and QM modules, with extensive RICEF work including ALV reports, function modules, RFCs, BAPIs, user exits, master data objects, Web Dynpro, IDoc and ALE interfaces, SAP Scripts, Smart Forms, and Adobe Forms. Development and maintenance activities accounted for enhancement package cycles, including SPAU and SPDD adjustment of ABAP objects during upgrades and support for EHP7 and EHP8 code baselines.
SAP ERP ECC 6.0 was integrated with manufacturing execution and regulated content systems through multiple technical patterns. The environment implemented eight integration data flows between SAP and POMsnet MES using SOA Manager web services for inbound transactions and XML file exports for outbound transactions, an integration with Veeva RIM for labeling manuscript and artwork management using REST API calls, ABAP and Java, and an integration to Biovia LIM to exchange QM inspection lot data via REST API, JSON and ABAP. The technical stack referenced REST, SOAP, XML, JSON, Dell Boomi, Postman, Java and ABAP, and engineers also constructed ETL pipelines for commercial analytics leveraging Azure, SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server, Python and Power BI.
Governance centered on validated system practices for FDA GxP controls and SOX compliance, with formal ABAP code reviews and enforcement of SAP ABAP coding standards in development and operational support. SAP ERP ECC 6.0 was positioned as the ERP Financial backbone, supporting finance, supply chain, manufacturing and quality workflows while embedding structured upgrade processes and controlled integration patterns within regulated operational governance.

| SAP | Legacy | SAP BusinessObjects | Analytics and BI | Analytics and BI | n/a | 2003 | 2003 |
In 2003 Upsher-Smith Laboratories evaluated SAP BusinessObjects as part of a platform selection to address large IMS prescription feeds and the limits of spreadsheet reporting, associating the effort directly with its Analytics and BI strategy. The company was consolidating transactional data onto an IBM DB2 UDB data warehouse hosted in its iSeries environment to centralize SAP application data and Telemar contact records for sales and marketing analysis.
During the evaluation Business Objects competed directly with MicroStrategy, and Upsher-Smith ultimately deployed MicroStrategy for report delivery while retaining the BusinessObjects assessment as an architectural input. Informatica PowerCenter was implemented as the enterprise extract, transform, and load layer to pull data from three SAP systems, the Telemar contact management system, and the monthly IMS feed into the DB2 warehouse, enabling standardized data models for historical sales, physician addresses, and prescription behavior.
Operational ownership rested with the planning and analysis team supporting field sales and sales and marketing functions, with workflows shifting from manual Excel assembly to warehouse-driven reporting. The data integration and warehouse approach, informed by the SAP BusinessObjects Analytics and BI evaluation, reduced IT report preparation to roughly one quarter of prior effort and supported field force growth to about 120 sales professionals, while formalizing centralized ETL, data modeling, and distributed report delivery governance.
