| Clio Software | Legacy | Clio Manage | Legal Practice Management | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2009 | 2009 |
In 2009 Vela Wood implemented Clio Manage as its cloud-based Legal Practice Management platform. The firm, founded by Kevin Vela and later joined by partner Radney Wood, adopted Clio Manage to enable continuous remote access for attorneys and staff across its Dallas and Austin operations and to support a desk independence policy that allows month-long international work assignments.
Clio Manage is used primarily for matter and case management, time and expense tracking, and centralized matter notes. Attorneys use the Activities tab to add time and expense entries in real time, link entries directly to clients and matters, and record in-depth task descriptions, while the notes capability is used to log engagement letters, promises to clients, and significant milestones within a matter.
The deployment is cloud based and accessed through a web browser, which sustains staff mobility and international connectivity to firm data. Partners and associates keep Clio Manage open throughout the day to maintain a single system of record, and partners filter activities by matter to see which associates have worked on a case and how much time has been recorded.
Operational governance at Vela Wood centers on daily time entry habits and centralized activity logging to provide partner visibility into associate work and matter status. Partners report they very rarely go to bed without having all their time entered for the day, and the firm relies on Clio Manage to keep case information, timekeeping, and internal handoffs consistent across remote and office locations.

In 2019 Vela Wood implemented QlikView to establish Analytics and BI capabilities for its boutique law practice supporting attorneys and counselors in Dallas, TX. The deployment focused on venture funding analysis and legal operations reporting, with the Data Analyst working across Excel, Google Sheets, SQL, QlikView, and AWS during the January 2019 to July 2019 engagement.
QlikView was configured to support data modeling, ETL style workflows, interactive dashboards, and visualizations used in annual reports and partner-led funding seminars. The implementation included categorization and recoding of 200 plus venture deals and parsing more than 1,000 transaction documents, and it separated transactions by funding type including convertible equity, convertible debt, equity, and debt to improve the usability of recorded transactions for attorneys and paralegals.
Integrations and operational coverage included persistent data stored and maintained in Google Sheets, SQL-based data sources for transactional documents, and cloud platform evaluation work involving AWS as part of a created cloud migration framework. The Analytics and BI solution supported reporting on ten years of organizational deal data and produced BI reports showing funding trends in the North Texas region for attorneys targeting start-ups.
Governance and process changes centered on maintaining and updating data stored in Google Sheets and reworking the transaction layout to improve user experience for attorneys and paralegals. The analyst explicitly documented a 50 percent improvement in coding efficiency through the new categorization process and produced visualizations and classifications that the firm used in seminars and partner presentations.
