| Microsoft | Legacy | Microsoft Power BI | Analytics and BI | Analytics and BI | n/a | 2016 | 2018 |
In 2016, Wipfli deployed Microsoft Power BI within its technology consulting practice to deliver Analytics and BI dashboards for resource booking and project delivery visibility. The Microsoft Power BI implementation was designed to consume booking data from Project Service Automation and surface day, week, month and longer workplans for individual contributors and teams.
Project Service Automation is used extensively by 50 resource managers and project managers to reserve and book time for specific job roles such as ERP consultants and Java developers, and to generate per-person and per-day booking reports. About 300 associates in the practice consume Project Service Automation data through Microsoft Power BI dashboards, while resource managers use Project Service Automation capabilities for one-click reservations, soft-booking and rapid availability checks to align staffing to upcoming projects.
Wipfli replicates resource booking data to Microsoft Azure SQL Database, and Microsoft Power BI connects to that Azure SQL store to produce interactive dashboards for associates and delivery teams. The architecture separates the transactional booking system, Project Service Automation, from the analytics layer, Microsoft Azure SQL Database and Microsoft Power BI, enabling scheduled replication and reporting workflows.
Governance and workflow changes centered on operationalizing booking and reporting across resource management and project delivery functions, reducing reporting clicks and simplifying reservation workflows for resource managers. Wipfli’s delivery team also plans to extend Microsoft Power BI dashboards for management to expose resource forecast and utilization metrics to practice leadership.
