Domo Legacy Domo Analytics and BI Analytics and BI n/a 2015 2018
In 2015, Zenefits deployed Domo for Analytics and BI to centralize investor and product-facing metrics during its Series C fundraising period. The implementation was led by the companys sole data scientist at the time, who owned the SaaS Metrics investor deck and delivered analytical artifacts to investors less than six weeks after starting employment. The investor materials referenced include analyses of growth, churn, lifetime value, and costs. The Series C round raised 500 million and increased the companys valuation nearly 10x, and the Domo-hosted dashboards were part of the investor reporting package. Domo was configured to host dashboards and key performance indicators for growth, churn, lifetime value, and unit economics, reflecting standard Analytics and BI functional workflows. The team built regression models in R to analyze customer churn, support costs, and onboarding time, and those model outputs were surfaced into Domo dashboards for visualization and stakeholder review. Dashboards were product-aligned to reflect benefits insurance, Time & Attendance, and Payroll metrics, and experiments such as a radio advertisement test were instrumented to evaluate marketing return on investment. Regular SQL queries and scheduled data extracts were taught and codified by the data scientist to support repeatable dashboard refreshes. Operational coverage extended across product functions, with the lead data scientist working one-on-one with product managers for benefits insurance, Time & Attendance, and Payroll to translate product telemetry into revenue and cost drivers. Domo served as the central Analytics and BI layer for those product teams and for investor reporting workflows, enabling product managers to access curated KPIs. Training and hands-on model interpretation accompanied dashboard rollouts to ensure product teams could read and act on the visualized metrics. The implementation favored lightweight analytical tooling paired with R based statistical workflows for deeper churn and cost analyses. Governance shifted toward centralized KPI ownership and data literacy, with the data scientist creating and enforcing standards for the SaaS Metrics deck and conducting Basic and Advanced SQL classes for coworkers. Product managers were trained on best data practices to align downstream reporting and to reduce ad hoc inquiries into metric definitions. These governance steps institutionalized a common definitions layer in Domo, so investor and product reporting used consistent calculations and sources. The approach emphasized repeatability of dashboard production and hands-on training rather than introducing separate governance tooling. Outcomes documented in contemporaneous notes include submission of analytical work to investors within six weeks of hire, and the Series C fundraising result of 500 million with a nearly 10x valuation increase. The Domo implementation is described as the central Analytics and BI environment supporting those investor materials and ongoing product KPI monitoring.
