Cathay Cargo | Transportation | 27200 | $6.4B | Hong Kong | Descartes Systems | Descartes Core BLE | Real-Time Transportation Visibility | 2024 | n/a |
In 2024, Cathay Cargo deployed Descartes Core BLE to provide Real-Time Transportation Visibility, leveraging Descartes' Bluetooth Low Energy air cargo tracking solution to monitor the September 2024 Chengdu to Hong Kong transport of giant pandas. The implementation was executed as part of Cathay Cargo's broader Ultra Track service strategy and supported high value, condition sensitive airfreight moves.
Descartes Core BLE was instrumented with Bluetooth Low Energy tags placed on unit load devices and pallets, while distributed readers captured location and condition telemetry including temperature, light, vibration, humidity, movement and shock. The configuration delivers real time location and condition monitoring for airport to airport moves of electronics, perishables and pharmaceuticals and complements Cathay Cargo's Ultra Track service that the carrier has operated since 2021.
Readers are integrated with Descartes' global Internet of Things network and the Descartes Global Logistics Network service, enabling continuous capture of shipment status whether goods are in the air or on the ground. Operational coverage for the Ultra Track service spans 29 airports across Cathay Cargo's network, and the solution is used by airlines and ground handling agents to provide forwarding and shipper customers with persistent visibility into shipment state.
Operationally the deployment automated tracking workflows and chain of custody reporting, enabling ground handlers and air operations teams to surface multi dimensional cargo visibility and condition alerts to customers. Cathay Cargo and Descartes reported the solution contributed to the safe handling and arrival of the pandas, and Descartes has expanded its IoT reader footprint to increase geographic reach and support more temperature controlled and time sensitive cargo.

Cathay Pacific | Transportation | 30100 | $13.3B | Hong Kong | Descartes Systems | Descartes Core BLE | Real-Time Transportation Visibility | 2021 | n/a |
In 2021, Cathay Pacific Cargo integrated Descartes Core BLE readers, tags and network into its Ultra Track service to provide near-real-time location and condition monitoring for airport-to-airport air cargo moves originating from Hong Kong. This implementation sits squarely in the Real-Time Transportation Visibility category and used Descartes Core BLE to instrument shipments and surface telemetry into the carrier visibility layer.
The deployment included a distributed BLE reader and tag network, device management and data aggregation to support location tracking and condition monitoring capabilities. Descartes Core BLE provided the edge capture layer for temperature and condition telemetry, event generation for geofence and movement anomalies, and a telemetry feed that was consumed by Ultra Track to enable shipment state and condition visualization.
Operational rollout was phased across approximately 25 to 29 ports, focused on airport-to-airport moves out of Hong Kong and prioritized high-value and temperature-sensitive shipments. The program impacted transportation and operations teams by embedding real-time visibility into operational workflows, enabling proactive operational interventions and improving customer visibility for targeted cargo segments.

Dubai National Air Travel Agency | Transportation | 49000 | $5.2B | United Arab Emirates | Descartes Systems | Descartes Core BLE | Real-Time Transportation Visibility | 2020 | n/a |
In 2020 Dubai National Air Travel Agency deployed Descartes Core BLE readers and tags across its global cargo operations to digitize tracking of mobile cargo handling assets. The Descartes Core BLE implementation, aligned to the Real-Time Transportation Visibility category, was designed to enable real-time shipment and asset visibility at airport sites in the United Arab Emirates and worldwide.
The deployment used Bluetooth Low Energy readers and active tags to capture location and condition data from dollies and other handling equipment, feeding continuous asset telemetry into a centralized visibility layer. Descartes Core BLE provided core capabilities for asset identification, location tracking, and condition monitoring, enabling operational workflows for shipment tracking and handling asset reconciliation.
Operational scope covered dnata cargo operations at airports globally, with implementation focused on transportation and ground-handling functions. Governance changed operational processes by introducing centralized visibility for inventory of mobile handling equipment and by enabling loss prevention workflows, and the deployment supported improved asset utilization and reduced losses of dollies and other handling equipment while providing real-time condition monitoring.
