In 2023 the Central Bank of the UAE deployed mBridge Ledger as part of a Blockchain Platform engagement with the Bank for International Settlements. The program was developed in partnership with R3 to implement both a production wholesale central bank digital currency and a retail solution using the Corda enterprise blockchain.
Deployment prioritized a production wholesale CBDC ledger and associated token management and settlement workflows, aligning mBridge Ledger functionality with central bank issuance and inter-government payment processes. Configuration emphasized ledger-level tokenization, atomic settlement capabilities, and interoperability controls consistent with a Blockchain Platform architecture.
The implementation used R3 integration between the production wholesale CBDC environment and the mBridge platforms to execute an inter-government payment with the Ministry of Finance participating in settlement activity. Operational coverage included the Central Bank of the UAE and the Ministry of Finance, supporting government payment flows and the intersection of wholesale and retail CBDC use cases.
Governance was coordinated across the Central Bank of the UAE, R3 and the Bank for International Settlements for platform operation and cross-system settlement procedures. The Ministry of Finance described the transaction as settlement of government payments "without intermediaries", highlighting the direct settlement use case implemented on mBridge Ledger.
