Nlmk Group | Manufacturing | 38900 | $16.2B | Russia | OpenText | Micro Focus Asset Management X | Hardware Asset Management (HAM),Software Asset Management (SAM),IT Asset Management (ITAM),SaaS Spend Management | 2020 | n/a |
In 2020 Nlmk Group implemented Micro Focus Asset Management X to establish comprehensive control and lifecycle visibility for its user workstation estate. The deployment targeted Hardware Asset Management (HAM),Software Asset Management (SAM),IT Asset Management (ITAM),SaaS Spend Management capabilities and was delivered as an on-premises, microservice-based platform in Russia, with the system entering productive operation in May 2020.
The implementation configured core IT asset management modules within Micro Focus Asset Management X, including configuration item based asset records, CI interdependency modeling, automated discovery, lifecycle tracking, reporting and scheduling, and a service portal for self-service asset queries and change requests. The project also implemented the platform subscription capability to track reserve assets for remote use, and established named directories including Asset Location Directory, Model Directory linked to the corporate accounting model, Financial Performance Directory for cost centers, and Financial Index Directory for inventory numbering.
Deployment and integration work was executed in-house by Nlmk IT staff, with a single specialist handling platform installation and the development of scenarios for integration between internal information systems. Operational coverage includes tens of thousands of user workstations across the group enterprises, about one hundred trained users in material asset management processes, and ongoing extension of asset records and directories to support procurement and budgeting workflows.
Governance and process changes centered on aligning existing asset management procedures to the SMAX operational model, using built-in guidance and configuration to enforce consistent CI attributes and lifecycle states. The microservice architecture and out of the box data model simplified information consumption and sharing, providing lifecycle transparency for tens of thousands of IT asset categories and enabling improved IT budget planning while Nlmk IT continues to expand portal access and link assets to projects, contracts and budgets.

The implementation aligned with a corporate move to cloud hosted operations, and the deployment was executed into Sopra Steria’s VMware based private cloud to meet scalability and sustainability goals.
Micro Focus Asset Management X was configured to support hardware lifecycle tracking, software entitlement and inventory reconciliation, and SaaS spend visibility, complementing existing SMAX modules for resource, asset, and stock management. The solution leveraged SMAX codeless configuration patterns to enable rapid extension to mobile applications and to incorporate machine learning driven classification and routing where SMAX provided AI and analytics capabilities.
Architecturally the solution was operated within a container aware environment, with Sopra Steria using Docker and Kubernetes patterns for scalability and high availability, and the broader SMAX stack linked into a CI/CD chain that used JIRA and GitHub for change orchestration and automated testing. Sopra Steria maintained close operational collaboration with Micro Focus technical teams and R&D on tenancy and data segregation concerns when multiple clients were hosted on the same platform.
Rollout followed a staged pilot approach, validating with simple client environments before migrating customers with complex integration points, and governance emphasized executive sponsorship, regular technical and financial reporting, and cross functional training for development and operations teams. Quarterly SMAX release cadence and agile delivery practices ensured stakeholder validation throughout iterative deployments.
Sopra Steria reported outcomes aligned to the asset management implementation, including cost reduction through cloud deployment, built in scalability, improved service delivery via additional modules, and increased service agent productivity driven by AI and machine learning features available through the SMAX integrated stack.

University of Milan | Education | 10000 | $496M | Italy | OpenText | Micro Focus Asset Management X | Hardware Asset Management (HAM),Software Asset Management (SAM),IT Asset Management (ITAM),SaaS Spend Management | 2020 | Hogwart Italy |
In 2020, the University of Milan implemented Micro Focus Asset Management X as part of a broader Micro Focus stack that included Micro Focus SMAX and Micro Focus Universal Discovery and CMDB, targeting Hardware Asset Management (HAM),Software Asset Management (SAM),IT Asset Management (ITAM),SaaS Spend Management workflows across academic and administrative functions. The deployment was driven by a need to consolidate multiple request channels into a single point of contact and to grow self-service capabilities for students and staff while improving SLA compliance and traceability.
The implementation configured Micro Focus Asset Management X alongside SMAX service management modules, delivering a student and staff self-service portal, a centralized service catalog, reservation and scheduling workflows, SLA tracking, hot-topic analytics, smart search, and a mobile access layer. Codeless configuration options in SMAX were used to accelerate delivery, with Hogwart Italy responsible for tests, pre-production and production environments, service catalog setup, operator and administrator training, and master data integration.
Operational integrations included native API-based transfers from Micro Focus Universal Discovery and CMDB into SMAX, automatic discovery and inventory updates for production and test servers, and configuration item consolidation for endpoint devices such as PCs, tablets, and printers. The discovery project surveyed more than 100,000 hardware and software configuration items and discovered about 150 servers, while application service modeling linked roughly 40 application services to their underlying infrastructure to support impact analysis and end-to-end asset lifecycle correlation with service requests.
Governance moved to a federated model where more than 30 departments manage portions of the service catalog and request fulfillment, with centralized SLA monitoring and a single point of contact for users. Hogwart Italy led the rollout and knowledge transfer, enabling nearly 200,000 users to access transparent end-to-end request tracking, strengthened SLA compliance through out-of-the-box SMAX capabilities, improved service quality with full request visibility and traceability, and end-to-end asset lifecycle management enabled by CMDB integration.
