In 2018, Babbly implemented Rackspace Data Protection as part of a Professional Services engagement to address HIPAA compliance while stabilizing a production Kubernetes infrastructure on AWS. The deployment targeted a small startup environment where two developers needed a secure, scalable foundation to support frequent releases, automated pipelines, and production-grade monitoring.
The implementation centered on a production ready Amazon EKS cluster and Amazon RDS for database management, built via infrastructure as code. Bitbucket pipelines were used for CI/CD and AWS CloudFormation was used to provision and manage the infrastructure. Runway and Kustomize were used to accelerate infrastructure-as-code deployments and Kubernetes manifest orchestration, and automated application deployment pipelines were introduced to enable faster feature releases.
Security and data protection controls were configured across the stack to meet compliance requirements. Amazon Certificate Manager and Elastic Load Balancing secured public endpoints, and AWS WAFv2 with managed rules provided edge protection against common web attacks. Intra-cluster encryption and pod-to-pod security were delivered by the Linkerd service mesh, ALB Ingress controller and external DNS automated Route 53 record changes, and pod-level permissions on Amazon EKS enforced least permissive access. Logs and metrics were centralized to Amazon CloudWatch, with Container Insights and CloudWatch log groups supporting audit and troubleshooting requirements.
Onica, a Rackspace Technology company, led the implementation and transitioned CLI-based cluster creation to a managed infrastructure-as-code approach to improve compliance checkpoints and deployment control. The engagement included working sessions and documentation to upskill the Babbly DevOps engineer and to hand over operational runbooks for day-to-day management. The architecture was deployed across multiple availability zones with encrypted file systems and automated database backups to support reliability and compliance.
The solution enabled a marketplace launch on schedule with a production-ready Kubernetes architecture completed in six weeks, improved uptime for end users, and infrastructure changes designed to help Babbly meet HIPAA compliance standards. Rackspace Data Protection was positioned alongside the AWS-native controls and automation to provide data protection capabilities within the Professional Services implementation.

Core data pipeline components included Amazon Kinesis for high-volume streaming, Amazon EMR for processing, Delta Lake for cohesive streaming storage, and Amazon Redshift for analytics reporting, with workflows to ingest, enrich and assemble raw messages into high-value data artifacts. Rackspace Data Protection was positioned to secure and govern data assets while the data science and Blackline Vision teams developed contact tracing reports, leak mapping, equipment usage dashboards and compliance visualizations.
Integrations and operational coverage focused on streaming telemetry from G7 wearable devices using integrated cellular and satellite connectivity, with AWS load balancers introduced to stabilize traffic and online troubleshooting performed to resolve partner constraints. The implementation supported an increase in device reporting cadence from once every five minutes to once every ten seconds, enabling finer grained analytics for industrial sites such as refineries and power plants. Data ingestion and routing steps preserved message integrity and routed enriched outputs into Amazon Redshift for downstream visualization and reporting.
Governance and access controls were implemented to maintain strict client data separation, providing designated user access only to each customer organization and enabling the Blackline Vision team to deliver highly visual, interactive industrial contact tracing infrastructure.
