Cando Rail & Terminals | Professional Services | 900 | $500M | Canada | Rackspace Technology | Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge | Professional Services | 2017 | n/a |
In 2017, Cando Rail & Terminals implemented Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge to create a serverless platform supporting Quasar, its IoT based supply chain optimization platform. The implementation addressed processing and pushing IoT sensor data from train carriages to customers and is described under the Professional Services application category.
Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge was configured on Amazon Web Services using a serverless first architecture and infrastructure as code, with CI/CD pipelines and security best practices. The rearchitected environment employed Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, Amazon CloudFront, Amazon ECS, Amazon S3, AWS SNS, Amazon Certificate Manager, Amazon RDS and Amazon EC2 to handle ingestion, processing, storage and delivery of telemetry.
Onica, a Rackspace Technology company, provided the Onica Teams engagement model delivering a dedicated team of cloud experts for ongoing optimization, enhancement and 24x7x365 network operations center monitoring and support. Integrations included subscribing existing AWS SNS topics to the new environment and consolidating seven or eight monitoring applications into a unified alarming and alerting model, enabling reliable forwarding of sensor data from multiple sources including train carriages.
Operational scope covered the Quasar platform and involved close collaboration across internal development teams and multiple external vendors to implement automation and faster change cycles. Governance and workflow restructuring emphasized CI/CD adoption, infrastructure as code for repeatable deployments, consolidated security monitoring, and cost management through controlled resource ramp down.
Explicit outcomes stated by the engagement include shortening deployment times from 90 seconds to less than two seconds, lower operational costs, reduced latency, improved predictability and reliability, and enhanced architecture and security. The completed Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge implementation on AWS provided Cando Rail & Terminals with faster deployments and the operational stability needed to pursue larger customers.

Century Engineering | Construction and Real Estate | 500 | $50M | United States | Rackspace Technology | Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge | Professional Services | 2020 | Onica by Rackspace Technology |
In 2020, Century Engineering implemented Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge as part of a Professional Services engagement to operationalize its SmartSWM stormwater management product. The work was delivered by Onica by Rackspace Technology with Rackspace Technology as the vendor and an AWS cloud backend hosting the decision support layer.
The implementation established an edge and cloud architecture that pairs on-site microcontrollers and analog sensors with a cloud hosted decision support system. Functional modules implemented include real-time remote monitoring, hyper-local weather forecast ingestion, autonomous valve control for discharge management, tamper detection and alerting, signal conditioning for analog pressure transducers, and solar generation and consumption monitoring for remote sites. Data management and backend logic were refined to compute optimal pond surface elevations and discharge rates and to push actuation commands back to site controllers.
Integration work focused on strengthening the AWS environment and instrumenting secure telemetry between field devices and the cloud, with Onica defining requirements for cellular modem selection and verifying analog to digital circuitry integrity. Operational scope targeted Century Engineering’s stormwater facilities used by public and private clients to meet EPA compliance monitoring requirements, while the company retained engineering oversight from its Hunt Valley, Maryland headquarters.
Governance and rollout followed a two phase engagement model, first consolidating and hardening field hardware and electronics, then enhancing cloud architecture, alerting, and backend automation. Explicit outcomes cited include improved system reliability and security, higher pollutant removal performance, reduced land footprint for stormwater facilities through active volume management, and the initiation of machine learning model development for future predictive control.

Dh Life Sciences | Life Sciences | 63000 | $23.9B | United States | Rackspace Technology | Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge | Professional Services | 2016 | n/a |
In 2016, Dh Life Sciences implemented Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge as a Professional Services engagement to deliver a cloud-native, HIPAA-compliant solution that enables dentists to remotely access and back up patient data. The implementation delivered a hybrid architecture designed to connect physical dental practices with cloud services, supporting cloud-connected medical devices for dental imaging and web-based viewing and collaboration.
The solution implemented web-based imaging and collaboration modules that were deployable to both the dental office and the cloud, removing the need for multiple thick-client applications. The deployment pipeline was engineered to provision entire environments comprised of dozens of applications with a single click, and the environment was built to be self-healing to tolerate component failures and entire availability zone failures.
Onica by Rackspace Technology executed custom development and worked with multiple operating companies within Danaher to architect the software on Amazon Web Services. Operational and automation components include AWS CloudFormation for infrastructure automation, Chef for configuration management and application deployments, and a Jenkins-based continuous integration and delivery pipeline that preserves the controls required for medical device software.
Governance and operational controls were explicitly designed to meet HIPAA requirements and AWS guidance for HIPAA applications, with independent assessment for HIPAA and security compliance. The managed environment now supports thousands of dentists globally, provides zero downtime of the cloud applications through self-healing design, and is operated 24x7x365 by Onica by Rackspace Technology as Danaher’s cloud operations center.
