WEC Energy Group Utilities 7000 $8.9B United States Emerson Automation Solutions Emerson Asset Management Asset Performance Management 2016 n/a In 2016, WEC Energy Group implemented Emerson Asset Management to improve Asset Performance Management at a critical steam generation site serving a metropolitan area. The deployment used the AMS Device Manager module within Emerson Asset Management to consolidate diagnostics and device configuration for smart digital valve controllers, aligning plant maintenance with centralized asset health monitoring. AMS Device Manager was configured to present a single consolidated view of smart digital valve controllers from multiple manufacturers, removing the need for technicians to visit six separate valve locations for routine checks. Functional capabilities implemented included device-level diagnostics, centralized device configuration, and continuous valve monitoring, enabling earlier identification of degradation and fault conditions in control valves. The implementation integrated directly with DVCs mounted near each control valve, with a specific operational focus on sootblower system control valves. Operational coverage targeted plant maintenance and operations teams responsible for steam generation reliability, and the system was used to detect leaks and prioritize valve replacement and repair activities. Governance and process changes emphasized technician workflows and condition-based maintenance, shifting inspections from physical walkthroughs to diagnostic-driven actions. Using diagnostics from the DVCs, technicians identified steam leaks that were losing as much as $250,000 worth of steam annually, actions were taken to replace the leaking valves, and the sootblower system continued to be monitored through Emerson Asset Management to prevent recurrence.
