In 2017, NatWest deployed IBM Envizi to centralize environmental and energy data as part of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) program. The initiative addressed the bank’s need to reduce energy consumption and costs while improving data quality and reporting accuracy across a global real estate portfolio that includes circa 2,776 UK sites and an overall coverage of over 5,000 locations in 57 countries.
IBM Envizi was implemented as a single system of record for energy, sustainability and asset data, delivering data and analytics capabilities used for utility expense management, energy management, sustainability reporting and exception reporting. The platform was configured to collate meter and asset data spanning electricity through waste streams, and to support billing validation and performance feedback workflows, enabling consolidated analysis and standardized reporting across the organization.
EcoAct acted as the system integrator and embedded service team inside NatWest, consolidating energy, data and reporting services into a staffed function within the bank. This embedded model operated alongside IBM Envizi, ingesting multiple supplier feeds and meter inputs into the Envizi platform, and providing day to day management, analytics and stakeholder engagement services across branches, data centres, processing centres and corporate offices.
Governance and operational practices were restructured to a programmatic, proactive compliance and performance reporting model with streamlined data collection and management processes. Outcomes reported for the initial 11 month period included a total of £2.4 million in savings and cost avoidance, of which over £1.8 million related to improved billing validation, at least £128,000 came from exception-driven energy savings, and a £402,500 reduction in compliance expenditure during 2017. The program also established a foundation for more granular, high frequency metering rollouts and improved confidence in internal and external sustainability reporting.
